Think about the color black. Simple, powerful, at once classic and modern. Since 1915 Toru Arakawa’s family have used traditional, ecological Japanese dyeing techniques, striving
to create the purest realization of the color black possible. Arakawa’s company, Kyoto Montsuki, holds one of the most deeply traditional Japanese garments as its standard against which they judge their dyes—the formal garment historically associated with nobility, the black montsuki. Building on this powerful cultural and family history, Arakawa has teamed with the World Wildlife Fund to create “Panda Black”, an innovative approach to rejuvenating and repurposing old clothing through the strategic use of dyes. A journey that
began nearly 100 years ago with the creation of a single color now has the potential to help protect our world.
